Daniel Brown

Director/Agronomist

Having started my Turf Management Apprenticeship in January 1993 at Rich River Golf Club I have been fortunate to work in the golf turf management industry in four Australian states and five countries. As a result, I have constructed courses and cared for turf grass in many different climatic conditions including drought, snow, sleet, hail, tropical rainfall, typhoons and even the odd dust storm – if it’s happened, I believe I may have witnessed it!

Golf course design, construction and maintenance offer a huge variety of challenges and rewards. My experience as a golf course superintendent on some of the best courses in the world – including Barnbougle Dunes, Royal Queensland Golf Club, Blue Canyon Country Club (Thailand) Danang Golf Club and Hoiana Shores (Vietnam) has seen me collect a unique set of agronomy and construction skills.

In late 2020 I returned to Australia after a decade abroad to start Turfology. One of Turfology’s first appointments was to be commissioned by the Yallourn Golf Club to direct and support the agronomy/maintenance department in the lead up to the 2021 Gippsland Super 6 Australasian PGA professional golf tournament. Despite a short preparation timeframe due to covid related uncertainties the conditioning of the course received widespread acclaim from PGA officials, players and local members.

Following the completion of the event Yallourn Golf Club asked Turfology to provide a Master Plan for the ongoing development of their golf course. It was at this point that I joined forces with former tour player and friend Anthony Brown who has also been a long-time member of the Yallourn Golf Club. Our combined skill set allows us to blend all aspects from strategic golf course design, construction and maintenance to our projects and our business partnership was born from a mutual and deep interest in the promotion of the game of golf through assisting clients or committees in providing well designed, constructed and maintained facilities.

Anthony Brown

Director/Course Designer

My love of golf course architecture stemmed from stories told to him by my father Peter about the great Royal Melbourne, having participated there in the Australian Amateur himself many moons ago. Peter always had a love for the Royal Melbourne greens specifically and a huge respect for what is a beacon of golf design in Australia and in fact the world.

As a child, I would spend countless hours on the fairways and greens of the Yallourn Golf Club, located in central Gippsland. My love of country golf and the people who drive these clubs is a strong influence in the type of work I seek today, with the development of the game and promotion of golf at the grassroots level always at the forefront of my mind.

Having been lucky enough to travel the world from the age of 16 to pursue my dream of one day becoming a professional golfer, I’ve experienced quite a ‘hit list’ of courses played include The Cypress Point Club in California, the famed Old Course at St Andrews as well as a significant number of wonderful courses throughout Asia, the UK and Australia during my 12 year stint as a touring professional.

As a tournament golfer, some of my highlights include a second-place finish in the 2012 Australian PGA championship and a win in the 2014 New South Wales Open as well as numerous pro-am victories all around Australia.

With a keen eye for strategic detail, my approach to golf architecture and agronomy is a simple one that seeks to embrace the core values of what makes golf the wonderful game that has been so good to myself.
